Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease) Treatment in Raritan, New Jersey

At our office in Raritan we treat gum (periodontal) disease safely and efficiently.

In the beginning stages of gum disease, or periodontal disease, it is usually best to use a non-surgical treatment. Even if the disease has progressed to periodontitis, non-invasive periodontal therapy typically comes first. Routine procedures like scaling and root planing from our Raritan, NJ dental office are performed to improve the quality of gum tissue before surgery and to help minimize the affected areas that may still require more aggressive treatment.

Scaling and Root Planing

The first step is a thorough teeth cleaning that may include deep scaling to remove of plaque and tartar below the gum line.

The root surface may need to be smoothed out or planed to allow the gums to reattach to the tooth. Sometimes a bite adjustment is necessary. Antibiotics may be applied to manage bacteria growth. Sometimes, antibiotic fibers are packed into the gum pockets after the procedures to encourage healing and control further infection.

When deep periodontal pockets form between gums and teeth, it is difficult to remove plaque and tartar completely. It is near impossible for patients to keep these areas clean. In some cases, periodontal surgery is needed to restore oral health.

Scaling

Scaling is performed to remove plaque and calculus that sticks to tooth surfaces. The procedure targets the root area below the gum line. An ultrasonic scaling tool is used to perform the treatment. An irrigation process is usually included to deliver an antimicrobial solution beneath the gums to reduce mouth bacteria.

Root Planing

Root planing removes tartar, toxins, and microorganism that get embedded in surface dentin and cementum. The surface of the tooth root is smoothed to promote healing and help the gums reattach to the tooth. Root planing also helps keep bacteria out by making it more difficult for it to accumulate on the sleek surface.
